Blairgowrie & Rattray

Long ago, who knows what northbound travellers felt as they left this little settlement by the River Ericht to face the journey into the wild mountains of the north! Today, just a little of that sense of adventure and excitement about what lies beyond clings to this substantial and busy town.

It was only a wee village when the military road builders came here at the beginning of the 18th century, to push through their communications link with Braemar. Only a little later, Blairgowrie and Rattray played their part in Scotland’s linen industry. The community rapidly expanded, the swift waters of the Ericht powering the textile mills on its banks. Later still, the emphasis switched to soft fruit production, with the prevailing weather providing just the right mix of sun and moisture for the local raspberries.

Today, the mills have gone. There are plenty of raspberries however, as well as strawberries and other soft fruits to buy locally in season and enjoy a healthy treat. There is also pleasant walking by the river bank and in the countryside all around. Today, Blairgowrie thrives and has easy access to Perth and the motorway network. On the way, at Meikleour, you also pass the world’s tallest hedge! Blairgowrie also supports lots of local retail businesses, making shopping here a really friendly experience. It’s also an excellent touring base, with a good selection of accommodation.
